Welcome

The Hispanic Women's Council (HWC) 3rd Annual ABQ Nouveau Retablo exhibition and auction was held on June 2, 2012 and what a fun and memorable event it was. Thank you to all who attended and to those who purchased retablos. Your support is greatly appreciated!

The event showcased and auctioned off retablos donated by artists, poets, aspiring artists to benefit the HWC Scholarship fund. The donated retablos were available for public viewing and purchase at the art opening and silent auction which was held at Tintero Workshop & Gallery in Old Town Albuquerque.

Please visit the Participate page to learn more about donating a retablo for next year's event.

What is a Retablo?

Numerous definitions describe a retablo; many of which are in some way associated with a particular culture's folklore. For this even, we will use the literal translation for retablo, which means "painted/applied on a tablet." We expect and encourage many interpretations of the art form in this exhibition. The genre of folk art can be colorful, spiritual, symbolic, allegorical, historical or just plain charming. We focus on this art form because it can be found throughout New Mexico and the Southwest capturing a hybrid of indigenous artistry, centuries old Catholic iconography or contemporary ideas.

Wood tablets, provided by HWC, are available for interested artists.

Other Art Mediums

In addition to retablos, other mediums are acceptable such as art on tin, glass, tile, canvas, textile, etc. Visit Participate page for additional information.

Not an Artist

If you would like to support this wonderful cause, but don't consider yourself an artist, visit our Sponsorship page to learn about sponorship levels and packages. ABQ Nouveau Retablo will also accept your donated artwork produced by others.
